Community engagement discussed at the Academic Freedom in Action conference in Strasbourg

Nino S. Schmidt and Thomas Farnell (Institute for the Development of Education) presented on the essential connections between academic freedom and the civic mission of universities at the Council of Europe’s Academic Freedom in Action conference in Strasbourg, 13-14 November. The discussions highlighted how a strong civic mission can actively reinforce public support for academic freedom – an insight resonating strongly with our audience.

“Policy recommendations for the enhancement of community engagement in higher education: European-level policy recommendations”(available here: https://community-engagement.eu/knowledge-hub/), and national and system-level recommendations for community engagement in Croatia, Austria, Ireland, Belgium-Flanders, and Spain-Catalonia sparked valuable exchanges on approaches across countries (available here https://community-engagement.eu/knowledge-hub/) were presented.

These documents resulted from the SHEFCE project, so this was also an opportunity to give more details about the SPACE project, which is a continuation of the TEFCE and SHEFCE projects, with a special focus on community engaged teaching and learning.
